Hello, everyone. I am a new chicken owner, however my grandma owns 3 hens. I stumbled upon this site through Google and I thought why not because I recently stumbled upon some chicks at our local feed store on Thursday and I decided to purchase one. I'm really in love with my little chick, she's even learning to come to taping and she's slowly but surely catching on to her/his name, not only that but she follows me everywhere andddd she has learned not to eat random things off the floor.

She/he is about a week old (still haven't determined gender), but I decided to name my little chick Kirby.

Kirby has developed his/her first white feathers, she/he is a white leghorn if I am not mistaken.
I have her on a medicated starter feed, I clean her box about 5+ times a day because she's a pooping machine! L0L! I also plan to build a bigger coop for her/him and my grandma's hens when she is old enough to move into a coop, I can't believe how smart she is and how much she has learned.

And I hope to learn more about chickens here.

Hi Avla!
welcome-byc.gif
from washington state! It sounds like you take very good care of Kirby ( I think we can all relate about the little pooping machines we call chicks) I think you came to the right place to learn about chickens lol However I would like to throw out getting a friend for Kirby? Chickens do very well in "flocks" and it is very good for them to have another one around. Two are not any more work than, honestly

My grandma has three hens.

She will be moving in with them when she's older, she's also doing very well alone to my surprise, she doesn't seem to care for the hens (I let her visit them for small supervised time periods during the day.) If I leave her (even walking a few feet away) she does a loud "crying" chirp or she follows if she can, other than that she only contently chirps. I also heard (and researched) of chickens that are raised from chicks alone do quite fine.

what a lovely picture too! i bet it will be hard to leave her at grandma's when she gets big enough - maybe she'll be a house chicken

Thanks everyone.

I actually live with my grandma right now, so I can still see her everyday when she's older.

I would love her to be a house chicken, but she needs to be litter trained. XD
