I was getting my older babies together last Friday to take to auction, and I was seperating them by sex. So obviously I was looking at them each pretty well.

One of my jumbo girls apparently got a hair wrapped around her foot (most likely when they were inside and would fly out of the box). Her middle toe and the toe on the outside of her foot were really purple looking.

A friend of mine that was here said getting the hair off now would do no good, since the toes were already dying. Today the toes look just about black, and kind of shriveled.

What do I do with this poor girl? She will obviously be handicapped. She will need a solid bottomed enclosure, right?

I feel so bad that I didn't notice it before!

awh hun!!!

well i'd try to remove that hair. ofcoures at this point removing the hair may not cure anything but it will take away some discomfort for her. Remove as much asyou can, solid floor pen with soft areas for her to lay down (as I assume she'll be laying down a lot) and heck you could even tape a cotton ball around her tootsies once it all heals to keep her from getting a torn up deformed foot. If you're dedicated to keeping her like that she can sitll have a great life

Something like tht is so hard to see. It's ironic cause I just told someone about a simular thing tht happened to a button quail of mine. His case wasn't as severe though.
I can't really see her so I might be all wrong.... well could be all wrong seeing her too

I have been amazed at how resilent birds can be. She probably has been getting use to this for the last few days. If they are dead she has not been able to use them actually, just lean a bit on them. I would bet she would come outta it just fine. Kinda like a three legged cat. If she has even a small part of the toes left it would probably be even better. I would keep a close eye on it for infection, others picking at them, her getting them caught on/in anything cause she can't control them. Take cues from her and how she is doing but I would think she could live a fine life as long as she is cared for.

That sucks, but she might be ok (learn to walk anyway).

DD (the duck) had a feed bag string wrapped around her leg tonight, had to net her and get it off - was on really tight. I'm glad I noticed, but I can see not noticing a quail having that, I don't inspect my quail that closely every day.

Yeah, these guys were out in the box on the porch, and there were quite a few of them, so I didn't notice it. I have seen Charlie (my phoenix roo, for those that don't know), and dad's OEG hen with feed bag strings on their legs. Luckily, they were not on tight at all, and I was able to remove them. I have finally gotten it through dad's thick head that he shouldn't just throw them on the floor

His hen's legs were more or less tied together because of the string, I was surprised she was even able to walk!

So, should I keep her in a bachelorette pen? Or maybe put her with some buttons? Or just keep her with baby chicks in a brooder? I'm thinking other coturnix's would probably fight with her, seeing as she would be seen as 'not right'.

Yeah, but the coturnix aren't exactly angels! Maybe I'll use her for a brooder mama, idk, I'll just have to wing it I guess. I doubt she'll be put with any roo, unless she shows that the foot doesn't bother her. The middle toe is going to be cut off at the base, so she won't have any balance from that at all. I think the other toe is pretty much a total loss as well, so she'll have the inside toe, and the back
