My 3 oldest hens, a BO, WL, and EE, are 4 months 1 week, 3 1/2 months, and 3 months (in order). Also 2 black stars that are 2 1/2 months. This is my first flock so I'm wondering when my first eggs will come from who and what I should do in preparation. I did read that black stars lay around 4 months too. Is that true? I could use as much help as I can get and also someone with experience with WLs because I've read they are nervous and flighty and I want to know what to do to deal with that. Thank you for any help, replies, and answers on whether I should let them free range a little less so I can watch for signs of squatting or just let them keep roaming with coop door open so they go to a nesting box.

I don't confine my birds and they almost always lay in the shed. Keep fake eggs in your nests to show them it's a safe place. I would wait and see if you have problems or not before confining them.

Sex links often start around 4 months, so do leghorns. The Orpington and EE should start around 5-6 months give or take, depending on breeding and feeding.

Keep them on a grower, and put out a dish of oyster shells when you start getting eggs or before. They will eat them as necessary.
