Axolotls

I know this thread is older, but my older sister got an axolotl yesterday. It’s in a temporary tank (as the permanent one hadn’t fully filtered yet) but Momo (the axolotls name) is adorable! She’s still a baby, so we don’t actually know her gender.

Thought I’d post updated pictures.

Also, a bunch of ‘professionals’ on tick tock (is that how you spell it? I have no idea) blew up when my sister posted a video of Momo.

The funny thing was that they were angry that she had no gravel... if they’re professionals, don’t they know that gravel gives them impactions?

Yeah, axolotls should never have any kind of gravel in their tank!!

Gravel is lethal for axolotls. NEVER give them it, they will eat it and most likely die of impaction. Some people like giving they're older axolotls fine sand, but by what I've read I think no substrate is best. I've seen people put tiles in the tank for them to have grip. But as long as they have a hide that's not smooth and a calm filter it's fine by what I've read. Note I am no expert but a beginner so if you have questions you should do extra research. But I have seen MANY axolotls that died due to impaction so she's doing that right.

I love them but not sure I could keep the water cool enough so had decided not to get one.
That is a legitimate problem. I along with other just have a clip fan secured above the tank for cooling. And if the water still gets to warm they can be fridged. Make sure you get a recommended filter because my axolotl almost died recently due to it not working properly. I incorrectly assumed it was enough I even did extra water changes but I was wrong. Thankfully my baby axolotl is recovering right now in the fridge.

Here is my baby axolotl before it was introduced to the tank. Make sure you test the tank everyday after you add the axolotl for at least a week to make sure your cycle doesn't crash because are's didn't right away. One of are biowheels (note not all filters have biowheels, but may have other bio filteration) didn't work on our filter but we incorrectly assumed it was enough because it was made to be able to be used for about one and half times the gallons are tank is. Each axolotl had over 10 gals each, we had 3 axolotls in it. About a month or so later the cycle crashed. Thankfully the axolotls have survived and are in the fridge but the reason I'm sharing this is so you don't do the same because my baby here axolotl barley lived.
