I had shared with the state vet what I had done for the hen that was not feeling well awhile back. That I gave the hen a container of garden goodies and the hen selected the onion greens to eat. That's all the hen ate for 5 days. By day 4 she you couldn't tell she had been sick. When she started on the onion greens she was not eating at all and wasn't moving. Yeah, I provide room service when the animals are in the mommy hospital.
I shared with the state vet that I had done the garlic water and had offered the onions greens to the turkeys. Turkeys would have none of the garlic or greens directly. I added a piece of onion greens to the water. The turkeys drank the water. It seems to have helped. (Much earlier in the process, I had offered garlic water and that seemed to have helped. It obviously wasn't the cure-all for them.)
The state vet said that garlic and onions had sulfur in them, which is also in antibiotics. So it may have been like giving the animals antibiotics. Even an onion green in the water would have some benefit.
I believe I had read somewhere that raw onions were a no-no for poultry, but I don't remember for sure.
I do know that when given the choice of feed & garden greens, the hen immediately went for the onion. She would ONLY eat the onion greens. She would not touch the onion. It worked for her. (Regular vet said she would be dead within 48 hours based on her symptoms/behaviors.)
I threw some small red onions into the flock she with now. When I went in to walk the pasture that night, I didn't see any onions. Since it's an open pasture, anything else could have walked off with the onions. I did see the girls eating the onion greens. No one in her flock is sick.
