from Michigan! You're learning quickly that chickens are silly little creatures. I have some that try to eat everything that comes in and others that run away from everything and anything. I think the big concern with chicks eating shavings is that they'll eat that instead of food. Since they are so adventurous, maybe they need some grit and kitchen scraps.
That is exactly what I was worried about, them filling up on shavings and not eating their food. When ever I saw them attempting to eat the shavings, I put the feeder in their faces and they immediately ate their food. I kept up with that all day and I think that got them thinking!
Bored chicks will eat bedding give them some bread slices to peck at. At first they may act scared of it but then they figure out it is yummy. I also boil broccoli until almost mushy tender and give it to them. Little treats will distract them.
These babies are already spoiled rotten with small treats and they just have to investigate my hands every time I put my hands in the brooder! But I think they have finally gotten bored with eating the shavings and have found, as most of you have said, that chick food is much more tasty than wood shavings. All the excitement for the day has them sleeping soundly all afternoon.
