Babies have arrived! Pics! And now with video!

Very interesting about what the 3 of you have written re maturing ducks, Kaessa, WVduckchick, Smurfbrew. And the teenager thing totally applies here. But how does that make you folks feel personally? I mean, you get to touch and hold them as babies and then as they grow not so much cuz they run off. And as adults, ducks are still so cute. If I couldn't hold and kiss one I'd be sad.

I was kind of prepared for it from reading here, but it's kind of a bummer. I would love snuggly ducks. My real goal was to make sure they'd eat from my hand without being scared, so I've accomplished that.

the snuggling would be huge for me. It's great you've accomplished them eating from your hand. Could that someday mean they let you handle them?

The littles will let me handle them. It's the actually catching them and picking them up that's hard, but once I have a hold of them, I can get them to settle down in my lap and relax. Pepper actually enjoys it, I think. She's not very snuggly, but she'll hang out and let me scritch her neck and face. Mocha and Harley don't mind much, either. Abba HATES it. You'd think she was being killed. But then again, she's been like that since she was a teensy little hatchling. She will eventually calm down and let me hold her, but you can't let go of her for a second or she's off. She's a lot better since we treated her for angel wing... I think she finally realized we weren't trying to eat her so she submits to being handled. She's not happy about it, though.

Peek and Poke won't ever be comfortable with being handled, I don't think. But that's ok. They're somewhere where someone takes care of them, which is better than where they were before I got them.

Oh I am happy for Peek and Poke. Don't wanna know what their previous situation was. I am glad YOU have them though and they have great lives. That's cool you can get some holding in with some of the new kids. And glad to hear Abba's angel wing situation
is getting better. It seems the being held thing with ducks is a personality thing. John, my friend, has the same issue. His welsh harlequin is fine with being held but the pekin Kensy is a lot like Abba. I know it's best to respect your birds' needs for space but it's not our fault they are so cute and soft and cuddly looking.

We still pick ours up even though they don't like it. We just can't resist. It really depends on what we're doing whether they run away or not though. If I'm on my hands and knees digging in the garden, I have to shove them out of my way to work. They want those worms no matter what! It's a little ridiculous sometimes with all three of their beaky faces in the same hole that I'm also digging in with my trowel.

Other times they run when they see us coming, especially if I'm holding the "towel of doom," which I've been using to restrain Deliah who has to have medicine for a swollen knee.

I wish they were snuggly like cats or dogs, but they aren't and I just have to accept it. Once when they were out loose in the backyard, they saw a hawk and came running to hide under the bench I was sitting on. It made me feel like a mother hen protecting her babies! Whenever they do things like that or get in my way in the garden, it just makes my happy that I've earned their trust.

Yep, it's that kind of thing that makes me happy. Like when I first put the littles out into the pen, and they got scared and all ran underneath me and huddled. Or when Peek and Poke come and hang out next to me because they're tired of the littles chasing them.

It's the small things with ducks.

This is who I go to when I need cuddling at my house:

Shiva is the biggest, cuddliest cat ever.

Oh, she reminds me of my cat Baby...RIP little girl. Shiva is simply gorgeous! Is she half himalayan/half orange tabby? She has the same orange stripey-but-not-quiteness that Baby had. <3
