Babies just arrived this morning!

Oh wow, I bet your excited! I have to wait until the 10th or 11th before mine get here *sigh*.

I'm glad they are all doing well

Shipping Box

Just had to clean one up. Her vent was closed shut with dried poo. Warm water and cotton swabs worked perfectly. All the others check out fine.

What causes that??

Also there was this blue sticky stuff at the bottom of the shipping box. Is that medicine/food/moisture for them?

I don't think anybody knows what causes pasty-butt. Maybe the chick does a ___ while sitting down and it sticks and then all the subsequent ones stick too?

The blue stuff might be a gel that provides moisture & nutrients.

Some chicks are more prone to pasty butt than others; just keep an eye on their bums. Generally, it doesn't recur past their second week.

I have noticed it happens more when the brooder temps are higher, and sometimes chicks don't need it quite as high as the "recommendations" for each week. Also, I never used a thermometer, I only gauged the proper temperature by chick activity. (After the first set of chicks, that is.... the first time I did everything by the book!)

Yeah i don't have a thermo either.

I just put it at a good height and they seem fine. When they first moved in they were all huddled up, now that they've warmed up a bit they walk around an are acting normal. No shivering or laying flat from too much heat.

When is a good time to take them outside? I have a crate i can put them in and flip upside down. I just finished plowing up my garden so plenty of worms and stuff for them to pick through. It's a 70+ day out today.
