I just hatched 8 silkies with 3 more on the way any time now.. the 8 that I have have what looks like mites. They are with their moms in our "redneck chicken birthing room" made out of a large dog kennel, chicken wire, and zip ties. I used the pyrmithen (sp) powder on all the babies this afternon, as well as the vents and under the wings of the moms. I will have to do the others in the coop tonight since they are all skiddish.. my question is, how often do i need to dust the babies? i dont want them to get infested.. i have noticed white buildup around the mouth of one or two of them, and the one mom silkie has it also under her beak.. this is my first time with this issue. please help

Clean out all the bedding in your coop and "redneck chicken birthing room" (I have the exact same setup :D , works great for broodies and chicks and integrating new chickens!), dust the floor of the coop and kennel, try to get some powder in any little cracks and crevices as well. Add fresh bedding, and then repeat the whole process in about a week, dusting the birds again as well.
You have to dust them a second time to get any eggs that might hatch after the first dose.
No big deal, unfortunately chickens get mites and lice, it happens to everyone at some point. I just go ahead and dust in the beginning of Spring and Fall with poultry dust, with a little DE in between to keep the broodies pest free since they don't get much dust bathing in during the warmer months. I also keep a dust bath area in my coops that's got wood ash in it. They stay pretty pest free.
Good luck :)
