Sorry the little bird didn't make it.
For future reference in case anyone else reads this thread for a similar issue:
If baby birds "fall out" of the nest and have feathers, they are actually fledging on purpose and the mother will follow them and take care of them. They may even figure out how to return on their own and will go to and from the nest at will for a few days before they leave for good.
If it's a little naked baby chick like the one found here, or one with only down and no real feathers, they cannot survive without warmth and it will be very difficult to raise them artificially. They best thing to do is what you did - either put the bird back in the nest, or if you can't reach it or find it, make a make shift nest (that is a safe from possible predators as possible) nearby and watch from a distance to see if mom takes care of the baby there.
