I have 5 new baby black sex links and 1 guinea. I've never raised guineas and wondered if there's any wisdom from anyone on these birds, I would appreciate any input. I'm just giving them chick starter grower feed and water. It is awfully hot here in Texas, do I need to put a light on their brooder? I've got them in a rubbermaid container with a cutout ontop of the lid that is covered with hardware cloth. It's about 93 degrees here in Texas. They are in my husband's shop.

I've got a thermometer hanging and it is reading 86 degrees, they are not grouped up to keep warm, they seem happy to me. I thought I would put the light on them at night.

Thanks for any input.

I don't have guineas, but have a friend who does. You may want to check, but I thought guineas needed a higher protein feed that chick starter.

Also, be prepared for a lot of noise. They're LOUD (but they are good at alerting the chickens to predators!)

I agree they don't need a light during the day in this heat. I'd turn the light on when it cools off, then go see what the temp is and how they look before I went to bed. Then you'll know for sure if the light is the best wattage and height for the situation.

Thanks for your replies. I turned the light off mid-day when the sun starts to heat things up. The chicks are doing well. They are a good tame bunch. The guinea is a bit skittish. Hopefully, I can spend more time with it and it won't be quite as skittish.
