Baby chic with red eyeball

I have a 2 day old baby chic that has one eyeball completely red. None of us noticed this before, but to be honest this little one was the least of our troubles. We had two get trampled and one stuck in his shell.

What could make the entire eyeball bright red, like a cherry!? Other than that he seems perky.

I'd be tempted to apply ophthalmic ointment to the eye.
