We picked up 28 baby chicks last Thursday at the post office from Murray Mcmurray. They did get the Mareks & Coccidiosis vaccines. Everyone has been doing good except for a few pastey butts the first few days but temperature looked comfortabe and were eating and drinking. I made sure each one drank water upon arrival and putting them in the brooder which is in our finished basement and we have heat lamps setup above brooder and temp has consistently been 95-100. My eight year old daughter took a liking to one that seemed to be the most friendly. She held her a few times a day but only inside the brooder because I was paranoid about them getting chilled. Today 5 days at our house (6 days old) I noticed a few times that this one chick seemed sleepier that I had seen her the last few days but still moving around. Then we went down after dinner and I immediately noticed the chick didn’t look right as soon as I put my hand in to work on cleaning up she didn’t move and just slept. I picked her up and she didn’t even her open eyes. We tried dipping beak in sugar water but nothing. Within 15min she had died. My daughter was so upset. I really wonder what happened?? Any ideas??

Sometimes chicks just die from unknown causes. I also had a chick die at six days old. We never figured out what caused it, but the others are all living and almost a year old.
As long as no other chicks die, and they all stay healthy, I wouldn't be too worried.

The brooder is actually pretty big and they have a lot of room they are all pretty spread out some more near the heat lamp others alittle further. I thought you were supposed to have your brooder at 95 under the lamp during the first week.
It depends on the Brooder your using. I just Run my heat to how ever the Chicks are acting. I never go by a set temperature. Happy Chicks run around peeping happily. Cold or hot chicks will act differently.

Here’s a pic everyone is acting normal. We did raise the heat lamps a bit to get the temp alittle cooler just In case.
