Not sure why I'm posting really. Nothing to be done now, but feel like sharing..
Our lovely Barnevelder went broody, so we bought 9 fertile eggs for her and waited. In the end there was only one hatch. So I went and got her 3 more chicks yesterday. Absolutely heartbroken to come home to two dead baby chicks this afternoon. It looks like one of the other hens made her way in over the boundary and pecked the life out of them..
I feel terrible that I hadn't made it safe enough. Mummy hen is separate with her own little house but it wasn't secure enough.
Not enjoying this experience, universe..
Now, I'll make a better secure environment tommorrow before letting mummy hen and two remaining chicks out.. But I can't afford more chicks now. Boo hoo.. I had such lovely dreams of lots of little chicks.. Now, I have mostly a Fat Big Bunch of Guilt : /
I'm hoping my little boy woun't notice there's only two now.. Eek
Anyway, had to get it out. I know it's all part of nature and I do like to eat chicken.. But image of the little babies with their poor pecked heads.. I'm sad : (
