We have a Barred Rock chicken, about 6 weeks old, who was just pulled out of our coop and carried through the yard by a fox. I managed to fire an arrow at the fox and scare it into dropping the baby bird and running off. However, the baby bird was lying on its side and soaking wet from the rain when I picked it up. I have not been able to find any injuries on the baby including bloody spots or wing damage, other than some missing feathers.
I brought her in and put her under the heat lamp in some hay like we do our newborn chicks from the incubator. I also provided some food and water. She is not moving very much and doesn't want to stand when I pick her up to hold her. Any advice? I am hoping it is just a combination of shock and wet feathers and that she will perk up when she gets warmer.
I also patched the hole in the run where the fox pulled the baby bird out with doubled up chicken wire. This is the first successful attack since we repaired and reinforced the coop and run over a month ago. This just happened to be the smallest bird in the coop and he pulled her out through a hole in the back of the run that was too small for any other bird to get through.

Always use hardware cloth instead of chicken wire. Predators can rip through chicken wire and stick their paws into the holes and grab a bird.
Sounds like she's in shock. Make sure she stays warm and dry and dip her beak in the water every few minutes. I think you can feed tuna to help her get stronger. Good luck with your baby!

She is getting more active now that she is drying out. She is on my desk, but she keeps falling over to one side. I see some small puncture wounds on one side from the fox's teeth, but no other damage and they don't seem very deep at all.

She's gorgeous, bless her little heart!

Chicks can be pretty tough. I have two legbar hens that survived a fox attack together when they were chicks.

One, Polkadot, was just chased, but the other, her sister, Furiosa, lost her wing and a large part of her tail. It happened when she was about 5-6 weeks old. TLC, superglue, antibiotics, and a little spoiling helped her along. Now they're almost 2 years old! Wishing y'all the best!
