I have a baby chick BO/WLH cross seems to have a cold. I moved them to a box that had higher walls and put them under a 100 watt light bulb to lower the temps since they were almost 2 weeks old and getting feathers. None of the other chicks seems to be having a problem but this one. She is smaller and whenever she breathes she opens her mouth. I put her back in the smaller brooder with the light closer and got some duramicin from the feed store to give her. She just lays around and seems to breath hard. Sometimes she seems to sneeze. What can I do?

Also, the hovabator I got I seem to have a problem maintaining humidity. I put in water and it will read around 50% but then when I get home it will be down around 20-25%? How can I keep the humidity stable? I have a batch due to hatch next week and lockdown is next Monday.

I had a chick that had a breathing problem/cold that went on for weeks after I seperated it from the others in fear it may be contagious. The poor thing just wasn't growing fast at all and and had a crackling noise when you held it do your ear and listened. I brough it to the vet and got some antibiotics for it after trying duramycin and still no change.... unfortunately I had to cull the chick. It had a poor quality of life with some sort of respiratory infection. It was the first time I had to cull a chicken .. if you decide to cull the best and easiest way is with dry ice it worked (after other failed attempts) and was quick and painless for myself and the chick! You can pm me if want more details on how to do it. I would see if the duramycin does any good.

Just an update. Baby chickie still acting funny but she eats and drinks when offered but stays under the heat lamp. Its a 100 watt bulb. I put in the buff baby with her to keep her company since she also is smaller than the other two. Im not sure what to do. She seems like she may make it but then I'll see her laying in the brooder box just breathing hard. I am thinking if she isnt any better by this weekend, I"ll take her to my vet that I work for and have them put her down. I cant do it myself.

Last and final log..............poor baby chickie passed away last night. I was going to take her to my job today and have the vet or a tech put her down but she didnt make it. Now I feel guilty for not doing it sooner.
