we are new to hatching chickens and had one hatch 5 days ago that seems to be doing ok but had a big red bump on belly button. Some of the umbilical cord is still attached. Will it harden and fall off or is it something else? Any ideas what this could be and how to treat it?

The photo's a little blurry, but it looks like the yolk sac wasn't completely pulled into the chick's belly, leaving a protrusion that appears dry now. I had a chick with a bump of about that size, and it dried up and fell off one day - when I checked, it was simply gone.

I'd keep an eye on it to ensure it looks like it's healing well and not being pecked by other chicks. Best of luck!
