A few of my chicks hatched over the past day, and one is not doing so well. She was a bit of a mess already when she emerged, with a big chunk of yolk and the umbilical cord hanging. After she hobbled around throughout the day in the incubator, and I finally got real concerned when I saw her feet weren’t normal looking… curled, one slightly bigger than the other. Also, one of the fluffed up bigger chicks started pecking at a sore on her leg, drawing blood. I removed the other chicks to the brooder and am now trying to care for this one. After doing the ole internet research, I treated for curled toes, but as she was still having trouble holding herself up, I am wondering if she is just sore here (see picture of injured leg) and won’t support weight on the leg. That leg also straddles out a bit. Should I bandage the wound? Should I also treat for splayed legs? Poor chickie, I don’t know much she can or should endure. Any ideas and thoughts are appreciated, thank you.

Awe, poor thing!

I would put a tiny dab of triple antibiotic ointment on the wound, leave the "boots" on, turn your incubator down to 95F, and put it back in the incubator for a few hours. It may just need some time yet to develop and get its legs.

If it still has issues, let us know as there are some great articles about how to care for dislocated hip or splayed legs.
