Baby Chick Pictures!!!!! POST!

My little Frizzle Ranger ;)

I am new at keeping chickens. Two weeks ago my daughters and I were at an organic farm that had chicks for sale. We got 4 of them and they have been a huge delight. They seem to be at around 1 month old at the moment. My first question is, at what age can they go outdoors? My husband is busily building an insulated coop with a red lamp but we live on Long Island and we get serious winters and I would be fine keeping them indoors for whatever long is necessary but I also want them to be able to stretch and have fun in their run and coop.

Also, I am not sure what breeds I have. I do hope they are all hens but the white ones were from a straight run. Any thoughts on sex and breed would be most appreciated.

Welcome to the land of chicken keepers! I usually put mine out during the day from 4 weeks and then outside permanently from 6 weeks. Be very careful with heat lamps outside. I urge you to look at Aoxa's thread on barn fires. So long as they have each other to keep warm they will be fine. The two light ones look like light Sussex. Here is a pic of mine at 4 weeks.

Thank you so much fancychooklady. The light ones do look remarkably similar to yours but mine have feathered feet. The brown ones do not.
