I am a first time chick Mommy and loving it! Hubby thinks I have gone off the deep end! I have 3 white leghorns and 4 Rhode Island Reds. I am looking to add some Easter Eggers, Marans, and Ameraucanas to my flock but I can't find ANY!!! My local feed stores are all completely sold out of chicks. I even tried the larger city next to me and several of there stores are sold out. I looked online at Ideal and they won't Ameraucanas until May and it's a longer wait for Marans. I don't have enough room for the 15 or 25 minimum chick orders a lot of the mail order places require. I have even looked on Craig's list. Is anyone else noticing a shortage of chicks? Does this always happen at this time of year close to Easter?

While you will probably not be able to find any before May I know that Ideal Poultry only has a $25 minimum. You can order as few as you want as long as you spend $25. There are a few others that may not have a minimum but I am not sure.

I could be wrong but for 4 weeks that is a lot of red in the large combs.

Well you were right. That red "girl's" comb popped and turned bright pretty red this week. But he's a very gently calm rooster.
Two of the white ones are roosters...but they are much more aggressive than the red rooster.

Now I just need to figure out what breed they are. Hopefully in the next week or two.

Thanks again for your input!

@Tmoorie ...

There are some other hatcheries that have a minimum order of 3 chicks. For example, My Pet Chicken requires you to only order 3 and if I can recall correctly others with either
no min. or a very small one are: Californiahatchery.com and cacklehatchery.com. And if you go to My Pet Chickens website they have a list of about a dozen or so hatcheries offering day old chicks. Not certain the min. those hatcheries have, but MPC lists their websites and phone numbers so you at least have a place to start. Hope that helps some !!!

My first bantams, I literally was a helicopter parent, and no one could talk bad about them, because, come on, they're perfect! (Even thought they stink up the room:P)
This little chick to Cleopatra the hen!

This little black chick to Patricia the black silkie!

(Camera shy, sorry LOL)

And this little brown chick to Phoenix the Pekin bantam!

I have many more pictures of many more chickens but I wouldn't want to flood this thread with pictures!

These are my three EE (was told they were Ameraucaunas, but further research says EE'ers). Marcia, Jan, and Cindy! They are 6 days old today. I hope they are all girls, but don't know for sure. Bought them at a feed store that said they were sexed, but never guaranteed.

We have three 11 month old hens as well. Curious to see how introductions will go in a few weeks. Our other three are Golden Comet (love her), White Leghorn, and SL Wyandotte.

Cute! I'd introduce them when they are fully feathered teenagers, but it's been so long since I've had chicks I really don't know when that is!

Awwwwwww!!!! Adorable! When I first got mine they were tiny! (Probably because they were banties) and the two standards were all awkward, like everyone was skinny yet they were really fat:P.

Haha, the little yellow chick looking upwards is like "What is life? Why am I here???...What am I looking at?!"
