About three weeks ago, we had a hen go broody in a nesting box, and due to complications with relocating her, I had to adopt the eggs she was sitting on at the time and give her new ones once she'd accepted her new spot. Well, I THOUGHT the eggs I adopted were due on Wednesday, but look who just showed up!
SURPRISE!
I wasn't even in lockdown yet when this one pipped! I had to take out all the eggs, remove the egg turner, fill the reservoirs, lay down paper towels, and put all the eggs back at record speed, and I was so worried the chick would end up shrink wrapped. Much to my delight, however, "Surprise" hatched this morning without any complications--he/she was even considerate enough to wait for me to wake up first!
I picked up two each, black sex links, gold sex links and barred rocks, from Dunlap hatchery here in Idaho. Gave one of each of the sex links to some friends. All seem to be doing well. The small one in my hand is my favorite and is very friendly. Every time I open the cage she is always the first to jump into my hand. She seems to enjoy being lightly stroked on her back and front as well as eating out of my hand. She is a bit smaller than the rest. She eats/drinks but not as much as the others and does sleep a little bit more. Other than that she seems fine. The other three chicks have voracious appetites.
