My chicks are 5-6 weeks old and are in my coop and loving it. All depends how the other birds take to them. My orpingtons could care less about my chantecler chicksMy 8 chicks are 4 weeks on Saturday. They are mostly feathered out now. Too early to put them in the coop?
not sure what's up with this chicks leg?![]()

My plan was to put them in a large covered pen in the coop with a heat lamp or two. The coop is 8x8 and has plenty of room for that. And when they are around 8 weeks or so, try integration. IM hoping that if my older flock sees them and hears them for a time they will accept them sooner. I will play it by ear at that point. What do you think? Most people don't put chicks out with out a light til at least 6-9 weeks old. We live in the foot hills so I wait until 9 weeks. I would say love your babies in the house a bit longer, I know the smell is not cute after 2 weeks old.
One option is to have them out during the day in a small brooder pen with wire so the older hens can see them but not get to them., that is what I do and bring them in at night.
