Aw! How adorable! They seem to really like you, pet birds, I'm guessing? You wouldn't want to get so attached to meat birds, I don't think. (This is why I can't raise any meat animals, it's not possible for me. LOL)

OnlyOrps, I was so tickled by your dog-and-henny show! I was going to ask if the puppy was a great pyr, and now I'm pleased to see I can still identify pyrs!
I had one, almost twenty years ago, who was also a rescue, and when we brought home chicks for the first time, she was there to meet them. Well… I say "meet", but she said "babies!" and promptly hoovered one into her mouth without making a noise. When we told her to drop it, she hung her head, spit out a dazed chick, and flopped down like we were the WORST dog parents EVER. She became an instant mother-slash-livestock dog to all of our poultry (ducks, one cranky old goose, and two rounds of failed chicken nuggets). We know for a fact she killed at least two raccoons, and on a night when she was accidentally locked out of the "poultry access" section of the yard, she put out an immediate alarm up from *inside the house*! I opened the door, out she went. Opened the gate to the fowl, and I swear I have never seen a dog move faster. Whatever was in the yard, it was BIG and had reflective eyes. It had killed a Peking boy, and gotten it all the way to the back fence by the time I got the gate open. She literally slammed into the fence in her attempt to "get" the thief, and then, when she was sure she couldn't get the intruder, carried the boy's body back to me with a mournful posture.
I swear she was depressed for days after… and she refused to come out of the poultry yard for *anything*. She would just stay curled up in the dead center of the space and all the birds would cuddlepile up to her.

What a touching story! I just live Pyrs so much! Do you have any pics of your Pyr with the birds? I have an LGD thread for pics with digs that care for their feathered friends and would love to have your story and/or pics there for all to appreciate! Dogs are so amazing!
OH MY they are going to be a handful of cute and then some. What breeds did you choose? They are all so adorable at 2 inches tall. Congrats! and![]()
I don't think they are feather sexable. Cute little rollie pollies. The dots may meant they have been factory sexed or it may mean something totally different. I am curious how the rangers will turn out. Keep us posted on them if you will. I am thinking of doing meat birds next year myself. I know the cornish do not do well at my altitude though. Nice to have the 2 different breeds so you can see which is preferable for you as well.
YUP that is what I pictured when I said it lol. Funny movie with a nice moral to the story too.
I will certainly let everyone know what I think of both breeds. We will be free ranging them on abt 2 acres we are putting up fencing today. I am also thinking of keeping 2 or so pullets from each group to breed to my orpingtons roosters and start an experimental backyard flock of duel purpose birds lol I like experimenting
Good luck to you!
I really can only have pet birds, well, they are for egg laying but once they stop they're just as valuable to me, I mean, after a few months of their life they are like a child to me, and I don't know if anyone would slaughter their child. LOL
I can't imagine slaughtering A child. what a horrific thing to say! Where did that even come from? I wouldn't let my children live in a barn or roam lose for hours on end, I can't even believe you're comparing birds to children. I'm pregnant and that was a terribly offensive comparison... why would you imply such a thing?!?!
