Baby Chick Pictures!!!!! POST!

they grow sooooo fast..

i am so in love with my 9 little chicks.. first time chicken mama here and knock on wood, they are all healthy and happy,. they free range and i love watching how they stick together.. every day they venture out a little further, always together.. they know my voice and i just call out "where's my girls?" and they all come running,, i sit on the ground and have them scrambling to climb on mama.. i adore them.. i have a couple that are kinda shy, but even they are coming around.. we have 9 chicks.. named after the N.Y. Yankees.. i figured we had enough for a baseball team.. hehe.. :) they are almost 8 weeks old now..

How old are your chicks? I'm so scared to free range because I'm scared they won't return. We have too many Hawks and raccoons so I'm really nervous! How did you do it the first time?

they are almost 8 weeks old and its amazing how well their instincts kick in.. they have a coop for night.. but during the day, they roam free.. they all 9 stick together.. if they see the shadow of a hawk, they take cover under a porch or something, all together.. we live in the country and my mama instincts have kicked in too.. i don't have bird feeders anymore, they attract owls and kestrels that prey on birds.. i am forever taking a head count.. every morning when i let them out.. all 9.. every time i come home from anywhere, all 9.. in the coop at night, all 9.. :)

gecko - they are gorgeous.

Here's my two on the left having a taster at free ranging for the second time, along with the dog and my hen Pepper. I'm jealous that yours come to you, we got ours at 4 weeks, althought by 6 weeks 'sophie' was obviously 'fred' so we now have Rosie and Sophie the second! Although they cheep at me and will eat from my hand, they don't come running like my hen does yet.

Tonight they are going in with her over night for the first time, so fingers crossed they are all OK by the morning.

i kept my girls in a little run around the coop for at least a week, when they started flying over the fence is when they started free ranging.. and trust their instincts, they will be kind of scared, clinging together, calling to each other when one gets out of sight.. and i spend a lot of time with them.. feed them from your hand a lot and they will become incredibly friendly.. also, they like routine.. a certain word will teach them when its treat time.. a certain call.. mine go wild for tomatoes and raisins.. so if i have that, even the shy ones come eat from my hand.. :) good luck..
