Hello everyone, I am new to forums and look forward to meeting the regulars and gathering as much info as I can. Basically I am a first time chicken owner, my wife had some when she was younger and talked me into it. Anyways, we got 4 baby rhode island reds from our local feed store, and everything has been great for the past 2+ weeks. Then I noticed one of the chicks was developing at a slower rate than the others, so I thought it was just a younger one or a slower developer. Then i talked to my friend that says male chicks develop slower, so it might be a male. Is there any way to tell? I know some people said they start to crow eventually, or their face develops differently. Thanks for any help, becuase I dont want a rooster but at the same time I dont want to lose one of my babies that I got attached too.

From everything I've read on here, you can make educated guesses, but determing sex is a waiting game... most people say when it crows or lays an egg, you'll know for sure!

I know how frustrating it can be to wait though!! I have 10 little Black Australorps who are 4 weeks old and I really want to know how many pullets/cockerels I have, but I guess I have to wait!! One thing to watch is comb and wattle development. Usually (not always), a cockerels comb and wattles will develop faster and turn red sooner than the pullets... but I dont' know much, so don't quote me on that! That's just kinda my experience! Hope this helps a little- I know you'll get lots of responses!!!

Mine experience (or lack there of in my case) is about the same on that. Tho I have 3 Cornish rocks that are about 3 to 4 weeks old and the supposed cockrel's comb is already taller thn all the rest of my various chicks. I'm assuming

But there's ALOT of stuff here that google NEVER showed me. But anywho, Info's out there just a matter of findin it. Good luck and hope all your little ones do great.
