Baby Chick Wing Removal?

I have a baby bantam ameraucana chick that had it's wing pulled through the wire by a rat (most likely) in the night which has broken the wing and looks to have completely stunted it's growth. The wing now hangs low and gets in the way of walking as the chick steps on the feathers. Since the chick is really healthy and doesn't show signs of distress, I see no point of culling it but cannot see paying for a vet to amputate the tiny little wing only to find out it to (most likely, Murphy's Law) be a rooster which would be terrible difficult to rehome.

I remember seeing people use a little green rubber ring that they put on a puppy's tail to dock it, which didn't look to distress the pups that I remember, but it was years ago since it's not really desired anymore. If I cut the circulation off the chick's wing with an elastic band so that it would fall off by itself, would the chick be in a lot of pain during the period of the band being attached since i assume it would with that main vein being there.

Only other thing I can think of rather than killing it would be to trim the feathers for the rest of it's life (which I can't right now as it is mostly the blood quill), unless it is a rooster to which I would cull it anyway. I could rehome it for free to a laying backyard home easily if it is a hen, and I am sure there are many people willing to give it a go in life so why waste it?

Any other ways to safely amputate a wing? How much would you estimate a vet to do it safely for such a small bird?

The chick is a week old so still quite tiny. I can get a photo if that helps.

Please stay away from abusive comments, I am trying my best to give the little guy a second chance in life. Total disregard to other peoples' feelings and thoughts get us nowhere. Some of us are a little less "educated" than others and ask these questions because we want genuine help. Thank you.

I'm giving it a go now, but it's proving unsuccessful as it does not like the tape+bandage at all. Don't want to go too tight. Seems to flop to one side now when it walks but is getting there, still picking at it as animals do when you try to help them....

Felt around the joint and it actually feels like the whole wing was pulled from the socket. No rips in the skin or sign of bone breakage. I'll do the tape for a fortnight though as the link says and see how it goes. Really lively little fella.

Hey I just realised that you are in Australia Fancychooklady. Good to see more fellow Aussies. Where in Tas? Beautiful place, going for holiday there by the end of the year. I try to go every year but always end up going in Winter as I ever only have free time around then haha!

I'm in the huon valley. You have just missed the most beautiful autumn. My favorite time of the year.
It's raining ATM, but we've been having unseasonal warm days.
We moved here 14 years ago , just love the place.
Have you got vet wrap? You really need someone to hold the bird s wing in place while you wrap.
If you can see any broken skin the best product to use is Terramycin antibiotic spray. It's for pink eye in cattle but I have literally used it on everything here at the farm. If you don't have a rural supplies near you try googling ' little valley poultry supplies ' they have most everything you'll need for chooks.
Cheers.

I stayed in a little house with a friend Huonville for a few months last year right on the edge of the little town on the other side of the bridge before the pub :) Then spent the rest of my stay in Forth at a lovely organic farm sitting on 80 acres which I enjoyed quite a lot. Planning on moving down there with my partner when we get a bit of money going, since it's easier to get money up here in Darwin than it is in Tazzie....but housing is stupid up here that you can't make use of the income whatsoever...plus the poultry scene is abysmal, have to get all my birds hatched from eggs interstate to have anything interesting!!

I've currently just got a regular bandage and the tape for now, but will check the stockfeeds or petshop tommorow. So far he is doing better now that I've tightened it a little more, just hoping he doesn't get too hot all wrapped up in it as our nights are only as low as 24-26 degrees....so during the day isn't so pleasant. I might have to get that Terramycin spray for general use anyway as I tend to get all sorts of injuries with any animal.

Cheers, you've been really helpful, hope you have a good night!
