Baby chick with yucky bottom

I have a week old chick and it looks like it has runny pooh. It seems to eat and drink well. his bottom all the down is stuck to skin. I was it all out last night and it is all caked again. He does seem smaller than his hatch mates. Any suggestions. He is on medicated starter crumbles. i have him in with ababy quail now to see if he will grow any. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Sounds like he may have pasty butt, and maybe something underlying that is causing it. I'll let the other more expert folks address the underlying causes, but I can tell you to definately keep cleaning the poo off.

If the poop cakes on too much, it will block the vent opening and then the chick won't be able to pass the wastes at all and his system will back up and the chick will die.

Good luck with him - I've got a tiny chick with a bum leg that I'm babying myself at the moment...
