baby chicks and antibiotics???

We are first time peep parents. Picked up our chicks today and along with our feed the store clerk gave me a packet of antibiotic powder and said it was to be added to the water dish daily for @ least eight weeks??? I brought it home thinking I would research and make a decision but I really haven't found as much info as I thought I would. We are raising these birds so the we have drug and cruelty free eggs and eventually meat. But I don't want them to die because I think I love each and everyone already. Please advise me chicken experts
