Our OEGB hen's children are hatching tonight, we are so excited, our first grandchickies! But the nest boxes are about 3' up, there is a ramp with 1 x 1s on it. How will the little chicks get down and then up again on the ramp? My hubby put some thin 4" garden edging stuff on the sides of the ramp so they won't fall off. Any advice is appreciated. We are so looking forward to these babies, thank you!

Fix her a spot on the floor and be in the coop the first night to make sure that she doesn't go up the ramp and leave some of the little ones behind. Most of the time mamma will do a good job, but it's a good idea to be around for the firsts (back to the nest, outside, etc.) so you can fix any problems that come up. Enjoy your new little fuzzy butts! I'm completly green with envy and wish one of the Australorps or the Orpington would get with the program and hatch us some chicks.

Thanks for your help!! One hatched during the night and looks just like her when she was a wee one, the rest have pipped. After sleeping on it, well sleeping here and there as I am so excited about this! I think for right now what I will do is put a 6 - 8" board across the bottom of the big door - she can fly and get up and down if she wants and close the door that the ramp goes to. I will put chick starter and water next to the nest box, there is plenty of room. I too thought about putting her/them on the coop floor but we are in farmland and I am sure there are plenty of rats around. Plus this will keep the wee ones dry as it's soggy here.
I will take pics today and post some. Thanks for the input, I hope you have chickies soon, 'tis the season!
