Baby chicks are pecking their momma’s eyes?

Sometimes we’ll give momma a bowl of chick starter and she makes the weirdest clucky-noises while she eats it. The chicks become curious and they hop into the bowl, completely ignoring their feeder and get in her way! The scene is absolutely hilarious!

They're not getting in her way; she's calling for them (in this case, so that she can feed them). Hens make a very similar noise if you remove the chicks so that they can't find them.

It's absolutely adorable, mind you. At about a week old, I start bringing them bugs (there's a tremendous Japanese beetle population this year) hand the bugs off to mum, and let her distribute them. It's really cute. (Unless you're a bug.)

Lol, we have way too many Japanese beetles as well, so that’s a great idea! The chicks have a blast playing around in the foodAround what age should I start giving them soft treats like banana?

I would wait a week or so, and mostly the hen will eat this, the chicks may not try much of it.
