HI, Im a newbie here, love this site, I know someone can help me! I have this problum with these chicks. I need help identifying what they have going on. The day we picked them up, it was in the high 90's, no AC in the car and a 40 mile trip home. Nest day, even hotter, they were like like pools of warm butter so I put a fan so it blew over, (not in) the big box I had them in. Tried to keep them the temps suggested in the flier that came with. next day he was breathing a little hard, it got worse as the day progressed. I isolated that one and another acting the same tan some tetrhe next day. Nothing within 40 miles open over the weekend, so no meds other than tetrecycaline, terrimycine and a bit of amoxicilin. (bee keeper). I tired all with mixed results. No 1 is still alive and has bouts of better breathing, then he eats a bit and drinks . No 2 died the same day. No 3 just is begining with yhe gasping. ALL got huge distended tummys, look like they will explode. No 1 chick pooped a bunch of watery stuff(no blood) so now has normal size.
I'm thinking the gasping the for air is because of the distended gut.....? can someone(s) please help? I'm open to all suggestions!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! I'm sorry to hear you have sick chicks and you have suffered loss too :hugs How old are your chicks? If they are newly hatched they could be suffering from mushy chick disease which can cause swollen abdomens. This is when the umbilical area becomes infected. Have you checked for pasty butt? Poop stuck on their bottoms can cause them to become blocked up and not able to pass poop which then inturn can cause swollen abdomens.
You could also drop by the emergencies injuries disease and cure section, pics are always helpful too. Here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

Wishing you the very best of luck with them :fl

Sorry about the situation with your chicks. I am hoping the people in the emergencies section will have sound advice for you. Good luck!

Welcome to BYC! I'm glad you joined us! :) How sanitary is their brooder (or the incubator they were hatched in, if you know). They could have Aspergillosis (brooder pneumonia). I would recommend posting in the "Emergencies/Diseases/Injuries and Cures" section.
