Baby Chicks in Panama (pics added)

Hi Redflirt,
I have lived here in Panama for 10 years now. If I can be of any help let me know. Nope, you don't need any rooster, let alone a special rooster to get eggs. Even meat birds will lay eggs, just not as many as layers. We just got 6 baby chicks called ponedoras (layers in spanish). We wanted leghorns but talked with MIDA and found out that they are not available here. Isa browns and ponedoras are the only layers here. I don't think the person that you were talking to has a lot of knowledge on the subject, either that or he just wanted to increase his sales!

What part of Panama are you in? I'm in the Azuero. I will be glad to give you any help I can about the country. PM or email me.

Hi NewChicGal,

We are in Boquete. We are currently remodeling a house and it was one of our workers telling me this. He honestly believed it. I think most are eaten before they get to the laying age. I am going to give them a try and see what happens. Where did you buy yours? I got mine at the Melo. Still looking for hay.

Where did you move from? We left Texas alittle over a year ago and drove down. We are in an RV with two dogs and pulled a jeep. It was an adventure for sure! Still is, with trying to get the house done.

Howdy Redflirt

We live in Alto Boquete and have for about 4 years. I just joined this site recently because I too am interested in growing my own. I have found that the stores in Boquete are priced just for those people who have blue eyes (if you take my meaning). I have found that if you go to the feed stores in David or some other place which is not playing so much to the Jubilado or tourist groups you will get much better prices and sometimes better information. Shoot me an email if I can help:)

Hello NewChickGal, I hope flock is flourishing. I am new to BYC and PMA, I am retired and live in Boquete and I have always wanted to have chickens as pet and for eggs. I am a city girl from Los Angeles, Ca. I came here as a volunteer on a 3 month assignment and decided I had found my forever home When at Melo the other day I only saw 'regular' chickens I really want something different and more fancy If you have sources would you please share them. I appreciated your input.
Gracias por tu ayuda
Chiriqui Chix
