Baby Chicks Just Arrived...scab below vent

I was checking for pasting up - and on one chick I noticed a scab (what looked like a hard ball of poop) under the vent. Thought it was dried poop and started trying to pick...it was attached to the skin and started to bleed a bit.

Any ideas what it is?

My money is that it's a wound..

I'd just let it heal and make sure no one pecks at it.

ours had this...we thought....umbillical cord?

It's probably the umbilicus; where the cord was attached. If they hatch and it's not dried up, it's called a "rough navel" - it'll soon dry completely & fall off. Nothing to worry 'bout...don't pick at it, though.

thanks for all your help.
i did notice both had them on there.
i have 10 chicks - it is either the barred rocks or australorps that have it on there.

will not pick at it!!!
