I just got 12 baby chicks and I need help on how to keep them warm.

I got them the feed and water but they are always huddled together so I moved the lamp closer .It didn't quite work because one place was hotter than other spots so I went with plan B.

My plan B was to take out the regular light bulbe and put in the red light .Should I have done that ?
If that doesn't work I'm going to break down and buy 2 lights. And I will watch what happens.

Should I do that?

Hi, jaceyp797, and

! Happy you joined our community! Is the lamp you are using an actual heat lamp? If it is it should just be matter of height - the chicks will move into/out of warm and cool spots. Also, is their brooder in a draft-free place? Good luck to you!

Thanks for replying. It is I got it from tractor supply so I am hoping so. I will use the information you gave.
You can also buy a cheap little thermometer to put on the bottom of your brooder and see what kind of temps you are getting on the floor. I like to do that the first few days so I know where my lamp needs to be. You shouldn't have any trouble keeping them warm with one of those red heat lamp bulbs from TSC. You also don't want to fry them! It's ok if the rest of the brooder is cooler then right under the lamp, they need to be able to move away when they want to.
