Baby Chicks VS Older Pullets

Well, we ended up tracking down an excellent breeder in central Texas and paid for three adult birds... Her best Australorps - two hens and rooster. We will go get them once the coop is finished in two weeks or so. With this, we plan to show, breed, and develop our own flock (show-quality Aussie eggs and chicks maybe available soon!). Now for a five-hour round trip!

Lots of pictures to come, no doubt...

Thanks for all the advice and insight, y'all!

I think that's the smarter move if your goals is showing and breeding. Hopefully you also now have a mentor that can save you time and $$ getting started. You can always pick up some different hatchery birds for some variety and different colored eggs.

I feel much better about getting into this chicken thing with some quality birds. That was the one thing I was hedging on (in addition to the expense of a brooder and heat lamps and all that) was the "hassle" of taking care of chicks.

That may be a venture I undertake in the future, but right now we just want some nice, SOP birds. :)

Thanks for all your comments, Percheron chick!
