baby chicks

I agree that if you don't want them in the house, then wait until spring. BUT I couldn't wait that long. I got mine (35 speckled sussex but I think one might be a partridge rock or wyan) a little over a month ago from Welp hatchery. I kept them in the house for 3 and a half weeks, when it was getting too difficult to clean the brooder I put them out in an insulated coop with 3 heat lamps about 2 feet above the floor. It has been single digits for overnight temps and they're all doing great. So yes they'd need to be inside for a while but not as long as everyone says if they're in a draft-free coop and have heat lamps. It got to almost 40 today so I shoved a few out into the run to let them have their first real snow experience. They ate some snow but didn't stay out long.

I know I couldn't wait til spring..I wanted them laying by spring or summer so I have 4 sets of babies going things are working out so far.I put the last set out to the barn at 4wk.s or maybe they were 3 wks.but they have a heat lamp and things are going good. They have adjusted well.I seem to hurry them along in the house by taking the heat off sooner. And I keep my house at 55=58degrees.

I had 24 8wk olds in my house until this morning. Moved 14 of them into the big rabbit cage, and still have 10 in here with me. The smell is getting BAD. My DH is wishing I'd been patient and waited til later to get the babies, but I couldn't wait!

Now if I can only figure out what to do with 10 more babies until we finish building a coop...
