IM new to chickens and i have 25 RIR all female coming next week . we have been getting a lot of storm over the last 2 weeks. I was want to know how to care for chicks if the power would go off:/

I don't know, every time it stormed here I just prayed my electricity wouldn't go out - it flickered once, but we were OK

(Looking back, I probably should've had a much better plan than just praying - on my list of things to do for next year - I'll be interested to see what others say)

Someone said to put hot water bottles and those moist dry pads that you heat in the microwave. It would be a nonstop job to keep warming them and changing the water in the bottle but you would have to, to keep the chicks warm! This is what I read here. :)someone probly has more info on this but thought I would let you know this much anyway.

Hmmm...if my power went out, my electric water heater would quit working and so would my microwave, so I'm guessing I'd need more alternatives. Good thing to think about and plan for, though.

Stock up on those Therma Care back pads. Or handwarmers. The ones that heat by themselves for up to 10-12 hours. Walmart has them.

I used one wrapped in a dish towel b/c it gets sooo hot I was afraid to burn the chick. My chicks laid on them and then would move away. It got me through about 4 hours of night time electricity out.

I have read other members here using them with success too.

If the power stays on you can use them on your back after you build the coop. LOL. Good luck.

This just happened to me last week! I had no running water, no nothing. My power came back on after an hour and all was well as I quickly covered the brooder with towels.

But, I'm interested in hearing what to do also. I couldn't come up with any ideas on my own short of pulling out the generator for the heat lamp!

I CANNOT live without electricity
