Not sure if I should post this under the sick/emergency chick area, or here since it deals with a duckling.
I have a buff duckling, about 2-3 weeks old. Today I let the three ducklings I have go swim in a pool while I gave them water. Everything was fine until I put the three back in the pen. This one was unable to stay on it's feet, it kept flipping over onto its back. I picked it up and it was behaving quite strangely in my arms. I wrapped it in a towel to help dry it off, and to warm it up, and it kept shaking its head, spitting the water they drank out of the pool, and tried to lunge out of the towel (It was not wrapped tightly around the duck, and don't believe the duck was in pain). But it seemed like it had a hard time settling down). It has finally calmed down, I think from exhaustion, but now it flops it's head back like a stargazer chick I had. I know that ducks can put their heads back without a problem and often tuck their head under their wings so I don't know if this is a serious problem or if it is just overly exhausted and that is why it is doing that. The chick was fine after I put it in the pool, and the other two seem to be just fine as well. There is nothing around that would have given the duck a head injury, I'm just at a loss as to why it is behaving this way.
My daughter had been holding the duckling and just showed me that the duck had died. :-( This was VERY QUICK. and already rigermortis is setting it (it hasn't even been an hour from beginning to end). Does anyone have any idea of what just happened to my baby?? :-(
