Baby duck missing beak

He just passed away on his own :/ All your information has been very helpful. We've had chickens for yrs now, and I just got some ducks last summer. I've never had anything happen to them. But now I know what can be done. Thank you again!

I'm sorry for your loss. It sounds like you made his final hours very comfortable and peaceful. Sometime hens will hatch ducks no problem, and sometime they'll realize the species gap and reject it. You couldn't have known she would react so badly.

We had a chicken hatch a duck egg yrs ago and they did great together. When the baby duck was full grown, it started hanging out with the other ducks. On a good note tho, the other egg hatched and the baby is doing great! Thank you.

I'm so glad the other egg hatched okay. If you have room in your flock, maybe consider finding another baby duck for him to grow up with so he isn't lonely?

I do have another duck that started laying on eggs less than a week after I put these under the chicken. I didn't think she would nest again since she already hatched a bunch of babies 2 months ago. Unfortunately out of 9 only 2 are still alive. I had 1 adult male come up missing then the one got attacked during the day and died from her injuries.. I think foxes got the adults and snappING turtles/ fox for the babies. I lock momma and babies up at night, except one night they didn't want to go in, and 3 babies came up missing. The others came up missing in the daytime. The 2 babies are pretty much full grown now. So I was thinking of trying to introduce this baby with the others when they hatch or grab another egg before they hatch and hatch another so mine has a friend. Since I'm sure it's going to be use to people by time the others hatch. We live a half mile off the road in the woods with a 2 acre pond. I should have enough room for around 12 ducks, if all the other eggs hatch. It should be fun :)

As long as he hopefully gets some friends his age, in my experience single chicks and ducklings can get lonely and reeeaallly attached to the humans who feed them.
