one of the other babies died in the shell and I have another one that has not pipped. it should have started trying by now, but I'm afraid to mess with it

I'm of the thinking that if they are too weak to hatch then they will be too weak to live. Try not too be down about it as you said you had too move them to the incubator so they may not have had a good start. We all live and learn. Hope you hatch again and I wish you the very best of luck.

my sister bought me a baby duck from the feed store Sunday. is it OK to put him in a box without a lamp? his hair is wiry if that tells you anything about how old it might be

Was the duck under a heat lamp at the store? Have you got it under heat now? I'm no duck expert but from what you say about him being wirey I think that's still his fluff that will not keep him warm enough I would think he still needs to be under heat. I don't take mine off heat until they have good covering of feathers.
