Hello!! Could you please help me figure out whether this is a baby roo or a hen? She’s been bullying some of the other chicks and had to be separated. I haven’t had any success reintroducing her to the others yet. I was also told that this behavior might mean she’s a rooster. It’s a 3 weeks BLR Wyandotte. Thank you!

Hello! Looks like a female to me. Girls will also bully each other...Sometimes even more than the boys bully each other lol!! The foot size is hinting to a female, and the tiny part I can see of the comb looks small enough.

Thank you so much for your response! It gave me some peace of mind 😁 It would be sad if it turns out to be a boy, because I’d have to rehome him — we’re not allowed to have boys. These are my first chicks, and well… the learning curve is real!

It is too young to be sure but the thick legs makes me think it might be a boy. In another 2 or 3 weeks could you post a couple of photos. One a close-up showing the head so we can see the color and size of the comb and any wattles it might have. A Wyandotte should have a rose comb so it may not be as prominent as some other breeds but color could be important.

A second shot showing the legs and posture could be helpful. Thicker longer legs are a male trait. An upright posture and certain body conformation might be useful in making our guesses.

It really is too young with that one, do not rehome it yet. Most of the time I can tell with mine at 5 weeks but I had one that I thought was a girl until it was 16 weeks old. Some of them can be a challenge.

Of course!!☺️ Feel free to post a pic in a few weeks or so on this thread to show her growth. When they are 1 month or older is the best time to tell their gender, because if they are a male they will be growing in their sickle feathers, saddle feathers, etc.- the telltale male traits! If "she" is a he and you have other wyandottes to compare her with of the same age, it's comb with be reddish at about 1 month old while females combs (of the same age and breed) with be lighter in color and smaller.
Sexing definitely does vary greatly depending on breed- breeds with single combs are definitely easier to sex IMO because the combs mature quickly, whereas it may be difficult for breeds with different comb types, such as rose or pea combs for examples.

Good luck and feel free to reach out to me anytime about raising chicks. 😀

Thank you so much for your detailed response. it really helps me a lot navigate through all of this . I’ll definitely wait a few more weeks and won’t rush into rehoming just yet. That story about your own surprise roo at 16 weeks gave me hope (and a chuckle)!

I’ll make sure to post updated photos in 2–3 weeks. one close-up of the head and comb, and another showing the legs and posture.

Thank you again! Honestly, I just looked at all of them and I think they all have huge legs 😁 I started wondering how lucky I’d be to end up with a whole family of roosters! But I won’t rush into anything and will post some pictures in a couple of weeks.
