Baby Pics - dyed Easter chicks

Seeing those dyed chicks for the first time...I am completely disgusted! I knew they did this to fish- tetras to be exact, but I did not know they dyed chicks. Uuuugh. People can do such disgusting things to make a dollar.
Glad they found a good home!

I have never heard of dyed chicks before. I knew they used to sell chicks and bunnies as Easter pets. I have not seen any chicks in any of the pet stores here. Not only is it sad to see this to me, it is even sadder they are passing off meat birds. I have nothing against broilers if you know what you are getting into. I remember Freebie first reaction when she found her first meat bird dead! I mean these were her first birds ever and she didn't have any idea they would eat themselves to death. She thought she had some avian flu epidemic on her hands. I told her they ate themselves to death. I can imagine some poor soul not knowing this and buys one of these dyed meat chicks and somehow manages to raise it only to have it turn into some superbird that grows faster than a speeding bullet and then crout.

Hey, AccidentalFarm, let me know what McMurray says about using the Brioler Booster at this point - I'm curious what they will say and suggest.

I just spoke with McMurray and they said the broiler booster would probably not help. Best advise they had was to remove the food at night so the chicks don't eat constantly. They did not think the chicks would live long regardless of what I did.

do they have Atkins Diet for Chickens??

Sorry for that news. Well, is there any chance that the chicks are not Cornish Rocks, or is this pretty cut and dry? I notice that my Cornish Rocks sit around a lot compared to the others, do you sit around a lot? All of mine sit around some, but the Cornish Rocks seem to do it niticably more. They seem to be pretty sweet little birds, very curious and not quite as skitish as the others.

It is too bad if that is what you have and there is nothing to do for them - but at least their lives will be better while they have them instead of being kid torture toys.

dying chicks is horrible but we did get chicks for easter the bunny left them last night ( its colder here and the basement was not suited for the brooder in the cooler temps) but my kids are used to the chickens so I thought it would be a good time to introduce them to them chicks you know watch them grow.....they've only seen them grow from pulletts 4 weeks old or so........it has been really alot of fun..........but you have to keep your eye on the kids and the chicks

I finally decided to just call Ideal and see if there was a possibility that what they sell to feed stores is not the same as what is listed on their website.
Answer was no. On the good side, they did say that they had very few orders for the cornish rocks- most orders were for the 'all male various breed'. They also said that there is no real way to keep cornish rocks from an early death. That is, after all, what they are bred for.

So, it is possible that my 3 little cuties are roo's - Ideal says they'd be the "Ideal 236's"- (no idea what that is). If so, at least I can try and find homes for them before fighting amongst themselves becomes an issue.

I just checked out te Ideal Poulty site - assuming this is the site you are talking about, they list pricing for their Easter Chicks. Their cheaper pricing category doesn't specifiy the type of chick. They do say they sell Cornish Rock St Run too, but they are a little more money to buy them - maybe - money being the motivation for your local store selling them in the first place - bought the cheaper ones and they are not Cornish Rocks.

You might try checking more with your local store to fing out from the person who ordered them, what they ordered. Since the site doesn't clarify the type of chicken sold for the cheaper prices, maybe you e-mail them (if your local store did in fact buy the cheaper ones) to find out what type they actually are.

It would be nice if this all comes down to them being some other kind of chick!

BTW, the site page I got this info on was http://www.ideal-poultry.com/policy.asp

If you go to their home page and go into the Order Policy link, you will get the page the link here refers to.

I started my last post before you posted your last post, then posted mine after yours posted - so I sound redundant. Oh well. 8)

It would be nice if stores that deal in this kinf of stuff especially 'feed stores' and the like would at least do enough research on these things to order colored chicks that at least have a chance at having long, healthy lives.

Shame on the local retailers and shame on the chick breeders for selling the poor little things. They whole idea is a bit irritating to me, but selling birds that have no chance, or roosters (that will probably be gotten rid of by the people for crowing) is just the icing on the cake so to speak. SHAME SHAME SHAME on you bad breeders and retail stores! At least sell a mild mannered pollet stat the people may end up keeping and really raising - if their kids don't kill it first!
