I just put 116 on 1/2"x1/2" at 7 days old with no problems.

I just didn't know if there feet would fall trough and hurt the chicks

About after a week or 2
I use 1/8 inch wire for them as babies but I find if its too cold the huddle up together and get their knees caught in the wire which messes up their joint and then they die because they can walk right.
