This morning when I went to check on the baby quail I noticed that one of them had not opened their eyes when I cleaned out the brooder and had not gone to get some fresh food and water with the others. The quail tries to cheep but does not make any noise. It cannot stand on its own and it is considerably smaller than the others. What should I do? I have to move it to the water because it can't move and it wont even eat!

I had something similar happen with a chick and I was able to perk it up so it could eat and drink itself with a plastic syringe with a baby bird food mix and water.

I've raised many wild baby birds with the feed but for this guy I made it extra watery and got a drop of the mix hanging off his beak then pressed some to the side of his mouth where the top and bottom beaks meet so he would swallow and ingest the beak droplet as well. I did this as often as he would take it and eventually he wanted it and would eat from the syringe no problem. Within two days he was just like the other chicks.

The brand is Tropican and its at petsmart. If you decide this route, I would call first to make sure as I live in Canada.

Good luck!

I honestly would just put it down. It sounds like its too weak to live any kind of life at all. If you do try to save it, you will likely have to feed it for the rest of its life if it cant see and wont open its eyes. Sorry this is happening to you. Good luck on whatever you decide.

Hi,
Go to Tractor Supply and buy the smallest bottle of Bovidr Labs Poultry Nutri-Drench. Give the chick one drop only by mouth. Repeat as neeed every 8-10 hours until perky. Put in the chicks water for 1 week. The water should look like very weak tea. here's the website: http://www.nutridrench.com The genius behind this all natural formula is that it doesn't need digesting. It mailines directly into the bloodstream.
Best Success.

If you are in the US, Kaytee Exact hand feeding formula is the best I have found. I've personally used it for over 10 years, and worked for a woman who had used it to raise literally thousands of birds over a few decades. Good stuff.

Good luck and I hope the little guy feels better or at least stops suffering soon.
