Seriously mealworms are dead easy to breed. Get a large tub of mealworms, put it in one of those storage bins that will fit under the bed. Add apacket of oats and a packet of unprocessed bran. Throw a carrot in every couple of days and all done. No smell, no fuss. I have 3 beetles in my lot now. And lots of pupae

You know what, I think I'm going to try them in the garage in the spring and maybe by the fall she will be used to them and see how much the chickens and quail adore them that I'll be able to convince her to let me keep some in the basement when it's cold

planning to groom my roommate to share living quarters with breeding bugs... Yup, I'm a crazy bird lady :D

i have really enjoyed reading your thread. i also live in England so it's nice to know that they can breed and raise their own in this cold and damp weather we get.
i was keeping bobwhites and they loved Alpha seeds which i grown in a seeder tray.
i am going to hatch some more coturnix in February as i find them more friendlier then the bobwhites which are wild.

They are very amusing birds to watch, not very cuddly once they get their feathers, but very amusing. Their tameness seems to depend on what food you possess.

Empty hand = "Stay the hell away from me."
Hand with a food they normally eat, such as pellets and millet = "I don't want this! I will eat you now!"
Hand with mealworms = "FOOD! FOOD!"
Hand with crushed up parrot feed = "I LOVE YOU!"

Even the more timid adults were climbing all over my hand for the crushed up parrot mix. Sadly for them, I only had a small amount as the mortar got too oiled up to crush anymore of the seeds, so I picked all the big bits out and bagged the rest for them. At first they were weary, so Rex went to investigate and then after pecking it, food peeped and called everyone to dinner. Next thing I knew when I took my empty hand out to fill it up with more of the crushed mix, the quails were gathering at the door and pecking at my hand when I brought it in! At one point I swear Rex was debating on jumping out of the cage door and into the bag, judging from the pounce position he got in as I started to open the door!

I eventually ran out and went to sit down at my PC, and Rex was NOT happy with that. He was angrily making "chechechechacha" sounds and then crowing while looking at me to get my attention, demanding more. Sadly my King must be patient, as the mortar needs to be washed.

My quails are kept indoors in a large parrot cage, though I do not have any form of heating other than a coal and electric fire, so they do well in the cold and when it does get cold, they merge into some kinda quail hydra! XD
I hope you do get a tame flock too! My king/button quails are only tame when you have something they want.

Also, sorry for the late replies, been rather busy lately.
