Hello all! I just posted on the chicken forum by accident, but here I am again
I have 2 day old, 3 baby quails that I hatched yesterday. They haven’t been very independent with food or water, I’ve had a small spoon I water and feed them with out of anxiety and they eat/drink whenever it is offered. They will run over to the water and food dishes, but just dabble, never really fully supplementing themselves. Any tips for making them independent? I’m terrified of death by thirst or hunger. Here is my setup

Tap at the food with your finger. They usually get the hint, and as soon as one learns, the others learn. For the water, I start with a dropper that they drink out of, then I start dropping water into their water bowl, and one will figure it out. Like the food, once one figures it out, the others learn from the first one.

I will try that! I have work today, so should I water them once more before I go? Then work on water training when I get home? They know where it is so maybe if they’re desperate they’ll try.

I would definitely water them before you go. Drop a few bits in their water bowl, and they might figure out right there. It doesn't take much.
