We had 2 baby Robins fall out of their nest during a thunderstorm. One was dead and one was alive. I looked online and they said if it was a "nestling", which I guess means little/not able to fly. The site told me the best thing to do was to take a plastic container with holes drilled for drainage, and paper towels for the soft part and attach this makeshift nest as close to the original nest as possible. Then the mother would continue to feed it. I did all of this. Which meant climbling to the top of highest ladder with a drill and a baby bird sitting in this makeshift nest. Well I looked this morning and it was dead. I am trying to figure out what I might have done wrong. It has been chilly here. Maybe it died because the mother couldn't sit on two nests to keep babies warm? Anyone know? Should I have brought it inside? Oh, I feel so bad!: Just want to know so that if it happens again I do the right thing.

Thanks,
Carol

I have put them back in the original nest. Some have done ok and others didn't. Also, you can find local bird rescues. These people are trained to raise the birds and set them free when they are grown.

You didn't do anything wrong. It hard to get a mother bird to take care of her little ones after they fall out of their nest like that. You did the best you could, but mother nature won. Sometimes, mother nature can be so cruel.

Thanks petlove and gumpsgirl.
I sure wish I could have reached the nest that the baby belonged in but it was high up. I really thought the mama was going to take care of the baby. She watched me while I was up in the tree from a pretty close distance and she was making a whole bunch of noise! Anyway thanks again for the replies.
