Baby snake? *pics*

Seriously though, what is wrong with a snake that is known to do well in captivity, such as a ball python or a corn snake? They come in a variety of patterns and colors, can easily be kept, and are very common. Why does it HAVE to be this random wild caught snake you found? Because it is free? Nothing is free. In fact, the wild snake will likely cost more emotionally and monetarily when its health begins to suffer because its needs are not being met. You can find normal phase ball python males for less than 25$ at reptile shows, and they make fantastic starter snakes because they are calm, easy keepers.

Well I say if you can feed it and keep it happy, You should keep it. I have A baby garter that i found and raised. he's real nice because i handled him alot good luck.

No it's not that it's free, It's that the people I live with refuse to let be buy a snake. I'm willing to pay for a snake. And I would go turn the baby snake out right now but I know as soon as I let the snake down my dog will murder it. Thanks again for your input, but The guy I know gets most of his snakes from the wild and raises them quite well. Once again guys, thanks so much.

If you want a nice pet snake, take a look at ball pythons. excellent pets, and captive bred is SERIOUSLY the way to go! wild caught animals are loaded with parasites and 80% of the time just DONT acclimate well at all. Check out a reptile forum or send me a PM and i can give you A LOT more information.

if youre dead set on keeping that snake, youll need to do some research on its dietary needs ( mainly mice for most colubrids) (i believe that guy is a black racer, or black rat. but i havent done tge snake thing in awhile so i may be off. they need a hot spot of 85-88 on the hot side and 75-78 on the cool. snakes need to have the ability to thermoregulate. i would keep the humidity for that snake at a steady 60%. get an under tank heater and REGULATE it with a thermostat. Zoo Med 500r is a good single unit choice and wont fail on you. place the probe on the glass on top of the heat pad abd turn the dial until you hit the correct temperature. dont skimp on a t-stat, heat mats CAN AND WILL burn a reptile if left unregulated.

You can catch and keep snakes in NC. U may need a permit. looks like a common black rat snake. very easy to keep in captivity. i am a former herper, and breeder of many snakes.

I kept a baby garter snake last summer. His tail got lopped off by a mower so I brought him home for awhile. Every other day he'd eat a small worm from my hand it was so awesome! He even ended up shedding for me before I let him back go were I found him plenty of time before fall hit.

Once found a white garter snake and kept her for awhile until my mom made me release her because she was afraid of snakes. So I let "Sonya" go right under the back porch

that was over 7 years ago though.

I've kept garters for awhile and never had one die on me. They were fat, healthy and happy.

actually, not correct. its far cheaper to get captive born and bred. check out a few reptile forums, youll see what im talking about. common misconception, though. wild caughts generally die too quickly.
