Finally getting my standard bronze babies in two weeks. I think I have the brooder all ready..I think I went a little overboard with a two stage heat lamp system but It's my first time soo I want to do it right. I know the tempature should start off at 95 degrees but is that 95 degrees focused under the heat lamp and is it ok if the outer sides of the brooder is as low as 70 degrees?

Nice job! Looks to be the source for many future Thanksgivings.

If overall temp. drops too low (put up a thermometer. in the unlit end of brooder), just cover the top of brooder with something fireproof up to edge of lamp fixture - adjust coverage depending on temp/activity level/behavior of poults. If it is already staying pretty warm at your location this isn't so much of an issue. If still pretty cool I'd compensate for potential drafts.

Don't know what feeder/waterers you'll be using. Placing both next to side of brooder slightly elevated out of bedding (2"x6"/bricks) and anchoring them to wall with a .5" wood screws with long twisty ties around feeder/water and back to screws will keep bedding from getting plowed into containers and keep them from being tipped over. Temp. in brooder can be dropped about 5° a week. However, gauge the drops on the activity of the poults (clumped up under lamp? Spread out away from lamp? Very active/inactive and panting?).

Get a little container of meal worms and finger feed/drop into feeder (make sure they're eating/drinking) sometimes using a couple of glass marbles in waterer or, dipping beak of one will speed up process - if you are getting them as day-olds don't get too concerned over lack of interest in feed - still burning off `yolk' (should be chowing down on day three).

Thanks a bunch for the Info. I will be getting as day old. I changed the heat lamp location on the brooder to a straight down in the center of the compartment so I get a more even heated area. It is directly over the temperature probe that switches my heat lamp from low to full on setting. soo far I am able to keep the brooder at a constant 95 degrees. both 75 degrees daytime and 60 night without adjusting anything.
