Some one gave me two baby turkeys as a gift a couple months ago. They came from the local feed store. I have a little farm and they thought turkeys would be a good addition. I was thankful but a little overwhelmed at the time to try to learn about a new animal. I brooded them and then put them in with the chickens, everything seemed fine so I thought I was doing a pretty good job. I think they are 2 or maybe three months old now and I noticed today that one of them is limping and their ankle joint is swollen. It doesn’t look red and I don’t see any injury or punctures. It may be a little warm but it’s hard to say. I just did a little bit of research and saw that I was supposed to be feeding them a higher protein feed. I just searched around and found a store a couple towns over that has turkey feed so I’ll be going to get that today. Could this be the problem? If it is the problem, will switching the feed help? What else might I be dealing with? I do have goats that the chickens and turkeys get in with sometimes so their is a good possibility it could have gotten stepped on.
Maybe related: I picked up the other turkey a couple weeks ago and realized they had a huge area on the outside of their hip that had been injured. The feathers and top layer of skin where gone but it had already scabbed over. It looked exactly like a burn but I have no idea what she would have burnt it on. It seems to be healing fine. I was just confused by that and thought maybe I should mention in just incase it could possibly be related.
